J4K07 - Java 4K 2007 unofficial feedback

I've decided to do the same thing as UlfJack is doing, for anybody who might be interested and because I, just like him, are reviewing the games in either case so I might as well share my thoughts. Note that everything here is strictly subjective, and thus very much influenced by personal experiences, personal tastes, and the like. If you disagree with me, feel free to explain why and you might very well change my mind. I will probably not understand all of the game functions and details on my first attempt, so please, let me know if I'm doing something wrong or if I've missed something. I can be reached at morre (at) x2d (dot) org.

For details on my scoring criterion and a short intruduction, click here.

The contest itself can be found over here: Java 4K 2007.

Enough of that, get on with the games already

Will do. The games are sorted according to submission date (newest to oldest). I've also included some of the withdrawn entries, and my own (unrated), both of which can be found at the very end. Here goes:

Jumping Jack 4K (Morne Alberts)
The death animation of the stick figure is brilliant. However, even though I do like the game in theory (classic gameplay that works well), it doesn't seem to work quite right on my machine. Once I've cleared the first "hole", I can either stand around, and eventually dying by falling straight through the ground, or I can continue jumping and that'll work no matter when I jump.
Simple graphics, good gameplay, but with a few technical flaws too great not to consider.

SubPar (Nicholas Klaebe)
The graphics in this game are nothing short of brilliant. For a 4k, this is also a very good technical achievement, considering the relative amount of variation. It's a bit on the easy side, though, and gets repetitive after a while. Also, as UlfJack pointed out, there are occasional bugs with collision detection. Overall, a good game that might have been even better if the focus had shifted slightly towards gameplay.
Excellent graphics, decent gameplay, and good technically.

Pixelmins (Luiz Fernando Estivalet)
The graphics are simple, but the gameplay has much to offer. I just wanted to clear that level - the only level, sadly. Lacking in length and replayability due to only having one level, but technically good. Lemmings was always a favorite, and this is a good clone that's simply too short to reach the uppermost scores. I'm looking forward to the sequel!
Simple graphics, good gameplay, and good technically.

Technical	3
Other: Only one level -2 (harsh, perhaps, but it really matters)

Abyssal Cave 4k (Juan Miguel Rodriguez Cerón)
Abyssal Cave is all about procedural graphics, and it does that well. Implementing multiple variants of procedural graphics is costly, though, and this reflects in the gameplay. This game could have used a time limit or something such to increase motivation. Also, the ends of each level (I believe that's what it is?) are confusing.
Simple graphics, simple gameplay, and good technically.

Other Confusing level system, technical bugs (such as infinite scores) -1
Total score:	6

Blackhaw4k (Jan Vrsinsky)
Gorgeous graphics. Plays well, but I'd rather be shooting myself then having the the helicopter autofire. Also, I'd rather pick up powerups than get new weapons automatically each level. Of course, the game's already technically impressive, so I can very much understand that size limits possibilities here. Overall, good fun!
Great graphics, good gameplay, technically impressive.

Road Fighter (rdcarvallo)
Pretty graphics for this type of game. Plays well enough, but it isn't very intuitive. I had to play several times in order to understand the game idea here, and what the different bars to the left mean. I really miss that you can't see your score after you die, because I don't want to be looking at my score all the time while I play.
Good graphics, decent gameplay, technically simple.

vBall4k (Gabriel T. Delarosa)
Graphics are simple but looking okay. The game is fun for a while, but lacks in the long run as there is no real goal - no levels of difficulty, no time limit. Thus, there aren't any records to break. Fairly simple technically.

Cosmic Dodgeball (T. Angioletti)
The graphics in this game are simple, consisting of geometric shapes of different kinds. As pointed out by UlfJack, the gameplay is surprisingly good, and has depth beneath a seemingly simple idea. At first glance a bit too simplistic, but it gains in the long run. Good fun!

4kSudoku (Anulith)
The graphics are what one would expect from a sudoku game, as is the gameplay. A few variations such as combos for bonus points (you can also get points from completing a puzzle quickly) adds to the gameplay. Technically, this game's impressive enough with randomly generated solvable sudoku puzzles and an intuitive interface.
Simple graphics, well-known gameplay, technically good.

Choppacide (Greg Tedder)
The graphics are very simple geometric objects. The gameplay is allright, although I'd have preferred the difficulty level achieved in another way (right now it's mostly about sentinel collision being so small they're hard to hit - more bigger ones might have worked better). Rescuing people works well.
Simple graphics, good gameplay, technically decent.

4k Penguins (H. Clower)
The graphics are pretty good, with a sprite that comes in different varieties for the different players and animated water. Gameplay is good, but the game is slightly too easy. Technically, this is a simple game, but it has a decent AI (which adds to the score here).
Good graphics, good gameplay, technically good.

ApoSheep4k (Dirk Aporius)
I love the graphics in this game. Very pretty stuff, and it even has icons! The gameplay is also an old favorite of mine, but it doesn't score super high because it's a remake of an old game in this contest (most everything is the same except for the graphics). Technically rather ordinary.

Cube Atck (Erik Hooijmeijer)
The graphics in this game are rather simple, but nice and coherent. Gameplay is decent, but nothing special - something about the control scheme bothers me, I'd have loved for this to be mouse controlled or something such. Technically, this is a simple game, but it works well enough.

Vector Racer 4k (Harm Boschloo)
Who'd have thought turn-based racing to be the future of racing games? Not me, anyway. In any case, I love this game with all my heart. It's almost flawlessly executed - great graphics, splendid gameplay, and technically very impressive. This is 4k at its best!

ApoFall4k (Dirk Aporius)
A remake of a classic, but it's nonetheless a fun game. The graphics are pretty, and the gameplay is solid. Technically, this is a rather ordinary game. It crashed on me once, but it appeared to be a webstart problem and not a problem with the game itself so I will not detract from the score for that. Overall, good fun for a while. I got to 4149 points :)

Rottweiler4k (Rostok)
Where to begin? I really don't know what to say about this game. On one level, it's very pretty, nicely animated, and well exectued. It's also a grotesque killing game with rather repetitive gameplay. All in all, I think it's a decent game, but it's confusing nonetheless.

VOTA (Greg Tedder)
The graphics here are simple but good. The gameplay is a bit confusing as you have to control multiple units, but can only control one at once. Too much random clicking for my tastes. Once you've only got a few left it gets manageable though, and that's when the fun starts. There are also sounds in the game, which is very nice.

Tank War (CaptainJester)
The graphics here are great, with several varieties of tanks and good coherency. The gameplay is good as well, but I'd have preferred having even more control of your tank (being able to stop, for one thing). The balance is good and it's well executed from a technical standpoint.

RoadFourk (Jojoh)
The graphics in RoadFoark are very good, especially with the slide marks in the ground. The color choices seem somewhat odd to me, but that's a matter of personal taste, I suppose. The screen shot features a brick texture on the wall that the game does not appear to have, however, which is a little confusing. I'd much have preferred it with the bricks, so I will subtract 1 from the score for this, at least until it's been explained. The game itself is fun, traditional racing - it only bothers me that I have to press Enter to start the next level. Technically, this is very impressive, with the marks, the AI opponents, and the excellent physics of the cars.

Ball Catcher (AJ Marx)
The graphics in this game are simple geometric shapes, but gets a plus for a nice interface (menu buttons and the like). I would have wanted to see a bit more polish in that sector though. It bothers me that the contrast between the squares and background is very low for certain colours. The gameplay is fairly original, and fun for a while. The movements, however, are a slight bit unsmooth. I can't put my finger on it, though. One thing that'd help is a more apparent goal, for example some sort of highscore. Technically, this is a simple game but it's well executed.
Decent graphics, decent gameplay, and technically decent.

jumpi4k (Rafal Zielinski (dReddi))
The graphics here are simple gemetric shapes. It's nice and coherent, though, and the minimap is a nice touch. The gameplay is decent, although a little slow. I have not yet had an opportunity to test this with a friend, so that is based solely on playing against myself and on knowledge of other tron-like games (I have played plenty of them). Technically, this is a simple game.

0H MUMMY!!! (Luis Javier López Arredondo)
The graphics are very good, with two animated sprites. The gameplay is solid, and pretty fun. Technically, this is a rather simple game, but it's well executed. The AI difficulty is just about right, which is always good.

4K Pacman (Mohd Ajami)
The graphics here are a bit simplistic; pacman doesn't even turn around. The gameplay is a bit simplistic, as well, being basically pacman without the labyrinth. Technically, this is a very simple game, and it bothers me that it uses (or so it would seem) keytyped instead of keypressed and keyreleased, which makes movement unsmooth. Fun for a short while, but not a winner in the long run. Needs more polish.

Trailblazer (Tony Weston)
The graphics here are very pretty, in pseudo-3d and all. The gameplay is rather addictive, and a good take on the old skyroads idea. I do think that this game could use a bit of friction and less sensitive controls, though - it's more a matter of holding your hand still than actually playing. Technically, this is pretty good. All in all, a very nice game.

Mega (CaptainJester)
The graphics in Mega are nicely stylized graphics with a vector-look. The gameplay works well, and is kind of addictive. I like the general look-and-feel of this game; however, I do miss brakes. While I'm confident they're not supposed to be there, I don't think it'd have hurt the gameplay. Technically, this is a rather simple game.

Black Jack (Carl Trusiak PittJUG)
The graphics in this game aren't particularly exciting, but they're clear and work well for the purpose. The gameplay is, well, Black Jack, and with nothing on the stakes, not even a highscore, it just isn't all that much fun. Technically, this ought to be a simple game to make, but it's well executed.
Good graphics, decent gameplay, and technically decent.

4kWormDiet (Grant Slender)
WormDiet is a snake clone with an unusual amount of originality. The graphics are pretty, although I find some of the color choices slightly odd; for example, I don't think the gray of the snake goes particularly well with the brownish ground. The gameplay's allright, and it's technically well done - that is, it has a clear purpose and handles it well, but it's not groundbreaking technology.
Great graphics, good gameplay, and technically good.

Sn4ke (Daniel Fekete)
The graphics here are superb. I would've loved colors slightly more saturated, but it's a matter of taste. Background texture, semi-opaque parts here and there, animated parts; the interface is excellent. Gameplay is surprisingly fun for a snake clone, and has a decent level of originality. The technology's also very good, with no particular flaws (at least none that I've noticed). This is an excellent game!

Brain Burning 4k (Juan Miguel Rodríguez Cerón)
The graphics here are very simple. It bothers me slightly that numbers pop up on top of the menu text, which can make the menu difficult to read. The gameplay is varied (three mini-games), which is always a plus. However, it is a bit simplistic (not the brain burner I'd hoped for). The technology is decent.

Falldown (Ryan Muller (bert))

Pipe Extreme (Tim Foden)
This game is simply as addictive as it is pretty. Outstanding on all levels, it is graphically very nice, something of a technical wonder, has potentially long life-span (quite a few levels) and is superbly fun to play! 4k has hardly been better than this (as is obvious by my playing it over, and over again).

Metro4k (Blaine Hodge)
I have virtually no complaints about this game. The graphics are vibrant, alive with city motion. The gameplay, although a bit on the easy side, is refreshingly calm and strategic for a 4k game, and the technology in this is nothing short of excellent. I'd have loved something to challenge me though, like disasters or theft. Overall, an excellent 4k achievement!

4k - Billard (Luis Javier López Arredondo)
The graphics here are pretty enough, and fill their purpose. The gameplay, however, is a bit lacking as there's no opponent, no scoring, and slightly unsmooth controls. Technically, this is nothing special, but it's well executed. Being a pool/billiard/8-ball fan, though, I just can't love the gameplay.

Space Evaders (Glen Carter)
The graphics here are excellent, with pretty sprites and nice animations. The gameplay is fun and fairly original at first, but gets repetitive quickly (and is a bit on the easy side). Technically, I'd say this is very well executed. I like the fast pace in the game, but I made it to level 16 with losing only a single life on my first attempt; this game ought to be harder.

Sub4k (Blaine Hodge)
The graphics in Sub4k are crisp and clean, although not amazing. The gameplay is nice but far too slow-paced for my personal tastes. I'd also have liked to be able to change my movement speed. Technically, this is a good achievent, but again, not amazing.

Space Inversion (Tim Foden)
The graphics are fairly simple, but animated and true to the style of the original Space Invaders. The gameplay is far too slow-paced and repetitive, however. It adds a nice touch to the original, but frankly, the original is more fun. Credits for the originality, though. Technically, this is of average quality. I admit to not having reached another planet, whatever that means.

Scorcher (CaptainJester)
The graphics here are simple, but they are well suited for the purpose. The gameplay is of classic Scorched Earth-style; adjust power, angle, and fire. A nice touch is the "powder" amount, which sort of compensates for the lack of different weapons. I for one know that additional weapons can be quite a hassle to fit in, as I didn't manage to in my Scorch game. The AI set to a good level, which is always nice, and multiple opponents makes this game fun to play. Technically, this is a very good achievement.

Starship Invaders (Arni Arent (appel))
The graphics here are simply excellent. Multiple sprites, a splendid GUI with a nice layout, and an efficient minimap. The gameplay is thoroughly entertaining, and fairly original for a shooter of this type. RoundWorld (Tom Palmer)
The graphics in RoundWorld are superb. The stylized look work well despite the simplistic approach, and I can do naught but love it. The gameplay, too, is both original and great fun, offering an excellent overall feel. Technically, this is a good achievement, but not spectacular. Either this game is too fast, however, or the game loop is designed to run without cap, because there's very, very little skill in it on this computer. I seem to recall that being much better on my laptop. In either case (too fast or poor loop) it's enough to warrant a slight point deduction.

The graphics are simple but suitable and nicely coherent. The gameplay is fantastic, of course, being chess. The graphics in Cubis are very nice, with an isometric layout and pretty colors. However, the game is slightly unsmooth, and the mouse controls are far from perfect; I cannot easily get the "cursor" where I want it. The gameplay is nice, although I cannot understand all aspects of it; for example, nothing appears to happen when the timer runs out (it ran out on level 2, I finished the level, and got to keep playing on level 1 with my previous score). The graphics here are very, very simple. However, this is more than made up for by the great gameplay and the sheer amount of levels. Technically, this is a very nice achievement (considering the variety of this game). This game might well deserve a higher score, but with this scoring system I cannot easily give it. Soviet Style: Duke in the egg factory (Maciej Bogdanski)
Graphics are allright with sprites and the like, but the graphics theme is slightly incoherent. I'd have loved a more colorful game, but that's just a matter of taste, I suppose. Gameplay is very simple, and so's the technical part. Overall, a decent game. I have not been able to retrieve the screenshot or webstart link for this game; please mail me if you've got them.

The graphics are just lovely! Gameplay, however, is slightly lacking; that is, it is good fun to begin with, but it's repetitive. Also, when you die (which you don't unless you want to - yes, it's that easy), you appear to lose a random amount of lives. The first time I tried I lost all five lives, the second time I lost two lives. Technically, this is very impressive with the sheer amount of graphics and the randomly generated maps and such. Beer Man 4K (Alexander Hristov)
Well, the graphics here are pretty and nicely animated. The interface gets slightly crowded, though, as customers move on top of each other, which I will have to detract a point for. Gameplay is allright, but nothing special, and technically, it's a nice achievement.
Great graphics, decent gameplay, and technically good.

Duukie 4K (Alexander Hristov)
Again, the graphics are great. The gameplay, however, is repetitive and fairly simple; that is, there are clever thoughts behind it, but there is no particular skill, luck, or variation to it. I'm beginning to sense a pattern here, and I feel the need to stress it; Alexander, these games are great, and graphically amazing for 4k, but I feel they could be even better with less sophisticated graphics and more focus on gameplay elements. Technically, this is another good game, of course.
Great graphics, simple gameplay, and technically good.

Raiden 4K (Alexander Hristov)
Well, the graphics are superb as always. The gameplay in this game is very nice; it has much more variation and gameplay elements than the other games from ahristov, and the game is well balanced. Technically, this is a great achievement. Good work!

Sailor Fun 4K (Alexander Hristov)
Well, the graphics are pretty but not amazing. The animations, however, are. The gameplay is very simple and repetitive. Technically, this should be a fairly simple game, but it's well executed.
Good graphics, simple gameplay, and technically good.

Mini Miner 4K (Alexander Hristov)
The graphics are very pretty as usual. Top marks there. The gameplay is very nice, too, but I do think it's a bit slow once you start missing with the hook; a fast-forward on that part would've been nice. This is a simple game but with lots of level and design elements, making it a very nice game from a technical standpoint.
Excellent graphics, good gameplay, and technically very nice.
